13814 - Bromeliads (Wild) - 2018-03-25|
(Dimension: 2030 x 1550 pixels - Counter: 2469)
Locality: Ecuador, Loja Province - Dry river canyon of the Rio Leon on Highway 35 near Ona at an altitude of 1880 meters.
Photographer: Jerry Raack
Note: This is an incredible place to explore for Bromeliads due to the fog that comes up the river valley from the coast to bathe the plants in moisture on a regular basis allowing them to grow in this otherwise dry region. As can be seen in the photograph, there are 100's of thousands of Tillandsia caerulea growing in great balls on the Acacia trees and cacti in this area. Each plant is small, but the accumulation of them in balls is immense as can be seen in the photos. When they are all in bloom, as they were in June 2015, the air is filled with a wonderful scent. Also growing here are many Tillandsia tectorum, Tillandsia latifolia, Tillandsia secunda and Tillandsia, Tillandsia cacticola and Racinaea pugiformis. (Sent: email@example.com)
